On Friday 17th August 2007 we set out on

the 'Long Way Up!' challenge

riding from

Lands End to John O’Groats

starting and finishing in Matlock Bath, stopping off and climbing

Snowdon, Scafell Pike & Ben Nevis

2,500 miles - 11,000 ft - 2 brothers - 1 motorbike!

Welcome to the ‘Long Way Up!’

Thank you for visiting our website.  We've put together some pages for you to explore.  Riding from Land’s End to John O’Groats OR climbing the 3 peaks is hard enough, but to combine these, starting and finishing at the biking ' Mecca ' of Matlock Bath, riding for 10 days on our motorbike, travelling over 2,500 miles and climbing 11,000 ft of mountains (over one third the height of Mt Everest!) is an extreme challenge.

What is the ‘Long Way Up!’ challenge?

Our successful attempt at the challenge last year is the first time anyone has completed it and so we're throwing down the gauntlet to anyone else to do the 'Long Way Up!' challenge.  You don't have to do it on a motorbike, but the basic requirements are:

·       Start off at Land's End

·        Climb the 3 peaks along the way (Snowdon, Scafell Pike, & Ben Nevis)

·       Finish at John O'Groats

Taking our inspiration from Charley Boorman and Ewan McGregor's 'Long Way Round' we decided to call our challenge the 'Long Way Up!'  We did the 2007 challenge to raise money for Cancer Research UK and the Acorns Children’s Hospice Trust

We also conducted research into motorcycle ergonomics, met people along the way and sent out a message throughout our journey about benefits of motorcycling.

In association with Triumph Motorcycles

We are very pleased to announce that Triumph Motorcycles (www.triumph.co.uk) have stepped forward to support the challenge by loaning us one of their brand new Tiger motorcycles, some fantastic kit and featuring us on their website news page!  We'll soon have details of meeting points along the way (see our 'Ride With Us' page) where you can meet us and see the all new Tiger for yourselves!

Starting from nothing - we've now gone global!

We had a mountain to climb even before we started!  We’ve organised the whole challenge from scratch and now have a very successful website with hits all round the world - across the USA, Canada, Africa, Australasia, Europe and places as far a field as Iceland and Japan!  We have been featured in ‘Motorcycle Rider’ (the official BMF magazine) and ‘The ROAD’ (the official MAG magazine).  We also have links from our sponsor's sites around the world: Triumph, Scottoiler, Phoenix (UK Arai distributors), JTS biker clothing, Draggin Jeans.  We've presented research at The Ergonomics Society Conference and we BBC TV and radio coverage in addition to other local, regional and national media coverage.  Since starting out we’ve gained the support of a number of high profile corporate sponsors and Mick Extance will be present as we finish in Matlock Bath!  We've also had great emails off Claudio from the 'Long Way Round' and the Dave & Si (the 'Hairy Bikers' from the TV) wishing us well on our challenge (see our 'Dedications and Message Board' page).

Raising money for charity

We have very special reasons for the charities we have chosen.  Alex's mother-in-law had breast cancer which was treated and then returned (she continues to live with it and remain fantastically positive about it).  Another person close to Alex died of lung cancer within a short time of being diagnosed.  Ben is closely associated with Jack & Jean Fewins who work tirelessly to support the Acorns Children's Hospice Trust.

Cancer Research UK ( www.cancerresearchuk.org)

More than one in three of us will develop cancer at some point in our lives.  Few of us go through life unaffected by the disease in some way, either from personal experience or through a close friend or family member.  Cancer Research UK is committed to curing cancer by understanding its causes and investigating how best to treat and prevent it.  Cancer mortality rates have dropped 11% in the last 10 years, deaths from breast cancer have fallen 21% in the last 10 years, 95% of men with testicular cancer are now successfully treated when 25 years ago their chances were slim, 75% of children with cancer are successfully treated compared to 30% in the 1960s.  Cancer Research UK is the European leader in developing anti-cancer drugs which are helping to save lives.  Your donations will help continue this work, by supporting Cancer Research UK , you will be making a lasting difference to many people’s lives.

The Acorns Children’s Hospice Trust (www.acorns.org.uk)

Acorns offers children and families a network of care, both at its hospices in Selly Oak, Walsall and Worcester , and through its community team, who offer 24-hour support at home.  Children can stay at the hospices for respite, emergency and terminal care.  The community team give support to the whole family, including practical amd emotional support for parents, special help for siblings and bereavement counselling.  There is no charge to families for Acorns' services.

Every penny counts so please help us raise money for these charities and sponsor us!

Raising the profile of motorcycle ergonomics

Another aim of this challenge is to raise the profile of ergonomics in general and motorcycle ergonomics in particular.  Many people think ergonomics is all about product design or comfy chairs, and whilst it can be, there is a lot more to it.  Ergonomics includes the environment and how it affects the way people work and use technology, it also includes the way people use information, and how they think and react in different situations.  In motorcycle ergonomics, apart from the physical design of the motorbike and how comfortable it is, factors such as workload, situation awareness, vigilance, perception of danger and risk taking behaviour are important considerations.  In addition, issues associated with how motorcyclists use mobile information systems, communicate through intercoms and might take advantage of advanced technologies such as GPS and helmet mounted displays underpin how technology might be designed specifically for their needs.  Our work as ergonomists feeds into many areas from product design, usability assessments and research through to public education, safety and training, traffic policy advice and developing industrial guidelines.  Throughout the 'Long Way Up!' we shall be conducting research and ergonomic assessments on a number of levels:

 ·       rider and pillion comfort (based on a survey which has been accepted for The Ergonomics Society Annual Conference 2007)

 ·       workload assessments throughout the rides and at the end of each day

 ·       situation awareness and vigilance research through incident analysis and diary reports

 ·       communications using intercoms (investigating rider to pillion communications as well as bike-to-bike communications)

 ·       GPS live feed applications for motorbikes

 ·       satellite navigation versus traditional map-reading techniques

 ·       other general performance issues (such as calorie intact/expenditure, fluid intake measurement, weight loss/gain, etc)

For general ergonomics information please take a look at The Ergonomics Society website (www.ergonomics.org.uk).  Its packed full of information about the sort of work we all do as well as our Annual Conference where I shall be presenting papers on motorcycle ergonomics as well as exhibiting the bike we'll be using for the challenge.  For more formal work inquiries or specific information on motorcycle ergonomics please take a look at the 'Motorcycle Ergonomics' page or 'Contact Us' with your inquiry and we'll get right back to you.
